Factors That Affect Your Rate
Insurance companies base your rates on several factors.
Here are some of the most common criteria we use to determine your insurance rates at National General Insurance.
No other factor affects your odds of having an accident more than your driving record. If you've never been involved in an accident, your odds of being in an accident are lower than someone with previous accidents.
Drivers in small towns have fewer auto accidents than drivers in large cities. In addition, vehicles in cities are more likely to be targets of theft and vandalism; so drivers in large cities will typically pay more for car insurance.
Statistically speaking, your age has a significant impact on your auto insurance rates. Drivers under 25 years of age are more likely to be involved in accidents than drivers over 25, and will pay more.
The statistics indicate that married drivers have fewer accidents than single drivers. If you're married, you may pay less than your single friends.
Men, particularly young men, are much more likely than women to be involved in accidents. Young men should expect to pay higher insurance premiums. In certain states like California, North Carolina and Pennsylvania, your gender cannot be used to determine your rate.
Many years of analysis have demonstrated a strong correlation between credit history and driving patterns. If you've got good credit, you may pay less for auto insurance. In some states, your credit history can't be used to determine your insurance rates.
Some vehicles cost more than others to repair. If you drive an SUV, sports car, or customized vehicle, your insurance premiums could be significantly higher.
Many insurance companies, including National General Insurance, offer numerous discounts to help lower your premium. Some of these discounts include:
- Multi-car Discount
- Anti Theft Credit
- Homeowner Benefit
- DynamicDrive℠ Participation
All discounts are subject to terms, conditions and eligibility requirements and may not be available in all states or products. DynamicDrive℠ is an optional App driven program that measures driving behaviors. Not available in all states. Smartphone, App and account activation required.
